Open RAN RIC: Which Use Cases Actually Matter Today

The RIC is the most discussed part of O-RAN and the least understood. Here is a realistic view of near-RT and non-RT use cases and their maturity.

The RAN Intelligent Controller separates RAN control logic from the base station and exposes it to applications. The non-RT RIC (inside the SMO) hosts rApps operating on timescales above one second; the near-RT RIC hosts xApps operating between 10 ms and 1 s over the E2 interface.

Non-RT RIC and rApps: closest to production

Energy saving, traffic steering policy, capacity forecasting and anomaly detection map naturally to rApps because they use aggregated data and act through policy (A1) or configuration (O1). Several operators already run these use cases in SMO platforms, sometimes without a full O-RAN radio underneath.

Near-RT RIC and xApps: promising, selective

xApps for QoE-based traffic steering, mobility optimisation and interference management show real gains in trials, but depend on E2 service model support in the vendor's DU/CU and on tight latency budgets. Operators should evaluate xApps against the E2SMs their vendors actually expose.

How to evaluate

Ask three questions of any RIC proposal: what data does it need and is it available; what action does it take and through which interface; and what is the measurable KPI impact. Use cases that answer all three cleanly are the ones to pilot first.
