The Kubernetes Skills Every Core Network Engineer Now Needs

You do not need to become a platform engineer. You do need to read pods, logs, services and network attachments fluently when the 5G Core misbehaves.

Core engineers ask us a version of the same question: how much Kubernetes do I need? The answer is a specific, bounded set of skills.

  • Navigate namespaces, pods, deployments and services with kubectl
  • Read logs and events to distinguish application faults from platform faults
  • Understand ConfigMaps and Secrets — where the NF configuration actually lives
  • Know how Multus, SR-IOV and network attachments give NFs their N2/N3/N4 interfaces
  • Understand rolling upgrades, readiness and liveness, and what a restart loop means
  • Use Prometheus and Grafana to correlate NF metrics with network KPIs

With those skills a core engineer can troubleshoot most incidents on a cloud-native core end-to-end and work effectively with platform teams. They are exactly the skills our cloud-native program builds, using a real 5G Core as the workload.
