5G Advanced: The Release 18 Features Worth Planning For
Not every Release 18 work item will reach commercial networks soon. These are the features with the clearest device and business pull.
Release 18 contains dozens of work items. For planning purposes they fall into three groups.
Near-term: device-driven
RedCap and eRedCap (Release 18) open the mid-tier IoT and wearable market. Network energy saving features reduce opex immediately. MIMO enhancements improve uplink and mid-band capacity in dense cities.
Medium-term: service-driven
XR support (jitter-aware scheduling, PDU set handling) matters once XR traffic is material. NTN enhancements and network APIs through CAMARA/Open Gateway support new revenue lines but depend on ecosystem maturity.
Longer-term: architecture-driven
AI/ML in the air interface — CSI compression, beam prediction, positioning — is being studied and standardised for later releases. Operators should follow it and prepare data pipelines, but not plan deployments yet.
